Honor's U.S. History (Period 2nd Period and 3rd Period)

Course Description

Honor's U.S. History is a survey course in which students will receive 3 hours of college credit from William Carey University with each successful semester completed.

The first semester is from the origins of America (pre-Columbian civilizations), up to the cusp of the Civil War. The second semester covers post-Civil War America through the post-World War II era. Sadly, the Civil War is a subject that is not sufficiently covered. It is a rabbit hole that a full exploration would consume an entire semester of teaching. I do love teaching the Civil War, and one of my favorite professors in college was a Civil War author. Just this summer I visited the battlefields of Petersburg and Appomattox, so I hope students will want to read and explore about the Civil War fully on their own.

As a University class, most of the instruction is teacher-led. students will be expected to read and be prepared to give their input on various topics each day. There will be many student-oriented learning activities in class. I will vary the activities to keep students engaged and eager to attend class.

As a University class, with much heavier reading and assignments than your normal high school Social Studies class, each Friday is a study hall session. Students are advised to use this time wisely.

There will be a major research project each semester, but the bulk of the grading will be in the form of testing. The units will be quite a bit longer than in World History with testing less frequently. Students need to understand in many college classes they have very few grades recorded.
