Economics (Period 5th Period)
Course Description
This class, which is required of high school graduates, is an introduction to Economic thought and process. Personally, it is my favorite class to teach, probably because students feel like they know nothing about the subject on day one, but as we progress, they come to realize they actually know a great deal about Economics, since they have been making economic decisions their entire lives.
While much of the class is an introduction to Microeconomic principles, I do have units on money, the role of both the government and Federal Reserve, as well as a bit on International Trade.
During this course students will also be participating in the Stock Market Game, a national contest where students team use $100,000 in virtual money to buy stocks, bonds and mutual funds, competing against other teams around the state. Our students have always done well in the SMG, just last year we had the 3rd place team in state in the competition.
Finally, I know very few of our students will major in Economics in college, but the economic mind-set, of evalauting your choices and weighing your options is something I hope will enrich their lives past this semester.
