The Passing of the Candle Bats

When asked about some of Coach Patterson's favorite possessions, he will tell of a special snapshot that was taken six years ago that hangs somewhere on his office wall.  In the picture, he was talking to his young starting catcher during a softball game.  What was so striking about it was the catcher, just barely out of elementary, was so small that she had to look straight up to him to see him in the eye. The exact words said during the conversation have been lost to posterity, but that young catcher apparently took the words to heart and gave it her all that day on the old MHS softball field. She - and her classmates - earned some respect on that day and the many days that followed, and they have kept that respect ever since.

This Monday afternoon, these classmates will take to the MHS field for the last times in their young lives.  Outfielder Jenna Harris, pitcher Rachel McDonald, catcher Rian O'Bannon and infielder Britney Stephenson will leave some very big shoes for the underclassmen to fill.  And while there is still softball to play this season, Monday will be their special day on the diamond.  They have given their blood, sweat, and tears - in practice and in games - for the honor and success of the softball team and Magnolia Heights.  It is also fortunate that, along with the effort they have given, they have spread plenty of laughs and smiles along the way.

Jenn, RianO, Rach, and D.B. - the MHS family thanks you for all you have given in your playing careers.  We thank you for your dedication to your team and your classmates through the years and hope you remember that you have placed a solid foundation for the underclassmen to build upon.  Have fun the rest of the season and we will see you in the many upcoming tournaments.

Every one of you will be missed.

And you will always have a place on Coach Patterson's office wall.
