MHS Memorial Classic MHS Honors Past Players and the 1987 State and Overall Championship Team
The families of Cindy Broome Bolton (top) and Shan Whiteside are honored during the MHS Memorial Classic.
The tournament that was held at MHS this past weekend was called the "Magnolia Heights Memorial Classic". The word memorial was a very fitting title because of two ceremonies that were held before the championship games. Saturday evening before the girls championship game an observance was held to retire the numbers of Cindy Broome Bolton (# 22 - Class of '85) and Shan Whiteside (#30 - Class of '89). - two outstanding basketball Chiefs who are sadly no longer with us. The families of Cindy and Shan were present as a proclamation was read by Dr. Lishman retiring their numbers out of respect for these great players. After this season no basketball player will ever again wear those numbers in their respective sports for MHS. These are only the second and third numbers to be retired in the 36 year history of Magnolia Heights. The first player given this honor was Denny Brewer for whom the tournament was originally named. Denny was known as an outstanding sportsman in addition to a good student and each year an award bearing his name is given to the basketball player who has best represented those ideals. This year the award was presented to senior Katie Barham. When the award was announced the entire MHS contingent gave her a standing ovation because they understood what the award meant. Katie has never won a slam dunk competition nor has she scored the most points in a championship game, but she has run every suicide, shot every practice free throw, and driven all the long miles to road games and she has been an important part of the team throughout her high school career. She won the award because of her heart and dedication to Magnolia Heights. Katie is truly the essence of a team player and the Chief family thanks her for all the blood, sweat, and tears that she has given to the MHS athletic program.
Congratulations
Katie!!! We're so proud
of you!!! Check your @magnoliaheights.com email here: |

Before the boys championship game a recognition of the 1987 varsity boys was also held. It seemed to be a mini Homecoming because many players and coaches from 20 years ago were again on campus. Above are many of the members that made up that 1987 varsity team. The team suffered only one loss the entire year - and that was a 1 point loss with less than 2 seconds left in the game. Before the introductions of the individual players the group gathered and watched video of the championship game from 20 years ago. More pictures here.
The videos of past basketball games, as well as football, cheerleading, and many other aspects of life at MHS are courtesy of Mrs. Judy Weeks. We thank her for being so organized with video and photographic archives of MHS. |
