Twenty Eight Years Later, Honor Endures

On page six of the MHS 1982 yearbook, there is a single picture and four sentences. The short paragraph reads:

"Denny was a student at our school for eleven years.  He was a friend to all, and his courage, dignity and intelligence inspired all who knew him.  He was quick to smile on both his face and his heart. For the Class of '82, his memory will stay with us even after we go our separate ways."

Denny Brewer was called Home a full decade before the members of the Class of 2009 were even born.  Unlike his classmates, Denny's picture does not adorn the '82 senior composite in the north hall, but his spirit still lives up on the Hill to this very day.   Every year, during the Magnolia Heights Classic, there is a ceremony that reminds us that MHS binds us together for the rest of our lives - and maybe even longer.  This ceremony again took place Saturday, and senior Rian O'Bannon was announced as the 2009 recipient of the Denny Brewer Award.  The award is bestowed to the player who exhibits the spirit of teamwork, leadership, enthusiasm, and work ethic of  Denny Brewer.  It is one of the highest accolades that any MHS student can receive.

Congratulations Rian.  As long as you can look at that award and know the story behind it, and the qualities that you exhibited to earn it, then you make certain that the memory of Denny Brewer will forever be an integral part of the MHS family.

"Good-bye Denny" by Scarlett Miller

"Brewski, Brewski, dunk it Brewski," is what the crowd would cheer.

Every game they would cheer for him in voices loud and clear.

He was our star, our super hero - so handsome, tall, and skinny.

He was so kind and always cheery; he was our loving Denny.

He was so wonderful, and yet so modest,

his personality greater than most.

He knew we all loved him and admired his talents,

and yet he saw no need to boast.

He was determined to win every battle

in the many games he played in.

But no matter how determined and hard he fought,

his last battle he could not win.

It seems so unfair that such such a good person

should suffer the pain he had.

It seems that the good should live forever

and the suffering be left for the bad.

It's hard to believe and understand;

I find myself asking "Why?"

How we loved him and how he loved life -

oh why did he have to die?

We know God works in mysterious ways;

for every life there is a plan.

We just have to take life day by day

and live life as fully as we can.

Heaven is like a flower garden that smells so sweet to the nose.

God picks the flowers he wants up there -

and Denny is certainly a rose.

Denny Brewer - 10/1/1964 -- 5/31/1981
