150 Miles to Sunrise It can be shown that the horizon, the location where a sunrise is perceived to take place, is only seven miles away due to the curvature of the earth. That measurement is derived by mathematics - not emotions. From an emotional standpoint, it can be said the sunrise is exactly 150 miles away. ***************** Monday morning, the softball team, riding a rather impressive winning streak, traveled to Ridgeland and played what they hoped to be the two games that gave them a State AAA championship. The team was upbeat and had momentum and a positive attitude in their favor. But this was not to be the Chief's day. A 6-1 loss to JP and then a 4-0 loss to Hillcrest did them in. The 2007 MHS Fastpitch season was finished. And then it really started to sink in afterwards with some of the players - before they even left the field. The seniors realized that this was the last time to wear their uniforms and the underclassmen realized this was the time for them to learn some hard lessons and to remember and apply them for next year. Coach Patterson pulled them aside after the game and told them this was it and he was proud of them. He thanked them for making this a banner season for MHS and he also said that no matter how bad they felt right now, the sun would once again rise tomorrow morning and everything will get better.
That did not seem to help at the moment.
After cleaning the dugout and loading the bus, the disheartened team, with their parents, teammates, cheerleaders, and brothers and sisters in tow, stopped to get a bite to eat since they had been playing since the morning hours without a break. A smile here, a snicker there, and with family and friends around the team got somewhat more active and cheerful. After eating, the Hitt sisters asked if their younger siblings could ride the bus home instead of riding in the smooth comfort of their mother's car. They were allowed and seeing the youngsters with their older sisters made the entire trip seem once again as a family get together. The youngest even sat next to and talked to Dr. Lishman as "Field of Dreams" played on the bus video system.
By the time the Senatobia exit was in sight (exactly 150 miles from Freedom Ridge Park), the smiles were once again standard and the tear smeared eye black was washed away with laughter. The knowledge that the lessons and experiences of this year will be remembered and carried over for next year to help make the 2008 MHS Fastpitch team even more successful.
And, just like Coach had said, the tears had turned to smiles and laughter in exactly 150 miles, even before the next sunrise.
The Lady Chief Softball team has completed the 2007 Fastpitch season after dropping decisions to JP and Hillcrest. But even in the loss, the Lady Chiefs have gone farther than any other MHS Fastpitch team has ever gone. With only four losses the entire season, they will also hold the best record of any MPSA school. Great job ladies!!! We want to thank Kristina, Kara, Amber, Ann Marie and Heather for all their hard work in the Chieftain uniform. They have certainly left some big shoes to fill for the future of MHS softball, but they have shown the way of success to the underclassmen who will next August once again take the field and represent MHS. Good Luck, Seniors, in all your future endeavors. You will certainly be missed!!!!!!
